I just finished reading the Baby Led Weaning book by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett. My Sister-In-Law is the one who introduced me to the Baby Led Weaning idea. It made perfect sense and was something I really want to try with Everly.
I read the book to be sure I understood the principles and didn't mess up anywhere to horribly. I enjoyed the book and I'm going to do the Baby Led Weaning approach. The book says to start at six months and you basically skip the puree foods for baby. You feed your baby finger size portions of what you're eating for dinner. Have baby sitting up with you at the table on your lap or on a high chair. Let baby explore the foods. At first meal time will be play time. The baby will learn about the food and taste but won't actually eat. You should still be breast-feeding or formula feeding for several months until baby is actually eating real food. The book recommends nursing for at least a year. Baby will begin to want to nurse less and less as she eats more table food.
I asked our pediatrician and he was okay with it. He recommended I gave Everly rice cereal now (at four months) because breast milk is low on iron and she needs iron. I've started feeding her the rice cereal but she doesn't like it and just spits it out. We have been letting her suck on and eat table food a little early since she's only four months but I figure she's not even close to actually eating anything. She doesn't like that much either. She makes funny faces and reacts funny when eating. But she likes to feel involved during meal time and she likes to play with the food. I want Everly to enjoy meal time and to be a good eater. Baby-Led weaning seems like a great option to teach Everly to eat well and to teach her to enjoy food. Hopefully she won't be a picky eater because of Baby-Led Weaning. I'm excited to see how it goes!!
