My sister-in-law LauraKay was recommended the book 'On Becoming Baby
Wise' when her little guy was born by a ward member. She also heard
great things about it from a friend who followed the suggestions and had
her two month old baby sleeping through the night. Naturally, I thought
I should read it for Everly because we really struggle with sleeping.
She does not sleep well at night at all. She wakes up sometimes every
hour to every two hours in the night. When she wakes up she'll only calm
down by nursing. I can't get her to stop screaming any other way.
I
read On Becoming Baby Wise. I've concluded that these sleep books I've
read are great but I really don't think they work for Everly. I think
she has some other serious issues when it comes to sleep. Even as a
newborn she hardly slept. She didn't sleep as much as it's recommended
for newborns and she was constantly awake and alert. I do want to start
the Babywise principles with our next child right off the bat to see if
it'll work. But for Everly I tried forever to work with her and I
think it just made things worse. I was up practically all night with
her last night. I tried for two hours to soothe her without nursing.
I've given up on these sleep books and I'm just going to focus on what
works for her best.
You're supposed to watch the
clock and hunger signs for your baby and decide based off those when you
think your baby needs to eat. They strongly recommend feeding, wake
time then sleep time-in that order. You watch for tired cues and have a
routine for naps and bedtime to put your baby down. Always put your baby
to sleep drowsy and they say that will teach them to self soothe. I
agree with these ideas but unfortunately we didn't do that with Everly
and I tried working with her on it now that she's five months and it
totally backfired. So I've quite trying and now we are focusing on just
getting ANY sleep at all during the night. Hopefully I'll be Baby Wise
with my next child;)
