The No-Cry Sleep Solution

I've never been so beyond exhausted in my life. Everly's sleep schedule is killing me. 5 1/2 months old and she typically wakes up every hour or every two all night long. I've read several books and many online articles and blogs searching for a solution. I really hope to teach her to sleep better. I don't mind waking up once or twice a night but my body has become so warn down waking up as often as I am.
So I found this book The No Cry Sleep Solution and I finished reading it last week.

I really love the way it was written and I felt like the author did a wonderful job at making the book simple and explaining her ideas in an easy to read manner. She gives several suggestions and things to help babies sleep then offers the opportunity to create a plan that will work for you and your baby. After I read it I formulated a plan for Everly. I started the plan three nights ago. The first couple of nights it seemed to be working. Everly only woke up twice!! :) But then last night was right back to waking up every hour. The book says sometimes you take two steps forward and one step back but to stick with it. The author argues that you should see improvement after 10 days so I'm going to stick with it for at least 10 days. I'm praying it works!
Here's my plan:
  • Work on bedtime routine–Same routine every night. (begin at 8:00)
  • Work on same bedtime every night  (8:30-9:00)
  • Spend daily time in her bed so she feels safe and comfortable there at night.
  • Create a lovey (a blanket or stuffed animal that she becomes attached to that can comfort her). We chose a pink soft blanket that she likes to hold and rub already. I'm supposed to use this blanket only at sleep times.
  • Use key words when she is calm and quiet and falling asleep. After a while I can use those words to calm her down at night and help her fall asleep. I say "night, night baby night night."
  • Pantley's Removal Plan–this is what I was most excited about. This is supposed to teach Everly she doesn't need to be nursing to fall asleep. You pull out when the baby is about to fall asleep. Usually they'll fuss so you can nurse again but pull out usually within 10-60 seconds. Keep repeating this until the baby eventually falls asleep. It's worked most of the time for us. After doing this the fist night I didn't have to nurse Everly to sleep for naps. I just rocked her back and forth and it actually worked!!
  • The last thing I haven't started working on yet because I wanted to get her sleeping better through the night before I implemented this part of the plan. But there is a four phase plan to get your baby to sleep in their crib. Everly is sleeping in a twin bed in her own room but she hasn't ever been able to sleep in her crib. So I hope to get going on that plan but only when she begins sleeping better at night.
