This has been a year in process. I've wanted to take the kids on a tour of a farm. I heard the Rose Family Farm in Morgan gave tours. I contacted them through their website last fall and never heard back. They opened a cute little creamery down our street this summer. Everyone knows I LOVE ice cream. So naturally we've been there several times. I've even asked to purchase the shirt their employees wear. They mentioned they gave tours. So I was put in touch with the correct person.
We scheduled a tour and went over last night. It was so fun! We saw their 'nursery' where they had a few friendly calves. They actually loved being pet and licking. They were like dogs. Their tongues are so rough. Then we saw their 12 ft deep manure pile, the hay field, the pasture, the cows out on the pasture, their beef cattle, their milk tank, and their room where they bottle the milk, make yogurt, ice cream, cheese and cream. Then they called in the cows from the pasture to be milked. They showed us how they bring in the cows (6 at a time). They use hydrogen proxied to clean the teats and a paper towel to wipe it off. They showed us the proper method to milk a cow by hand. No harsh pulling! You roll and gently motion down. We also saw the machines they use to milk the cows. Pretty nifty!
They milk twice a day at 5:30 AM and 5:30 PM. It takes 2 hours each time to complete all the chores and take care of their 30 milking cows. The kids had a great time! We learned a lot. We bought a gallon of raw milk and a couple blocks of their cheese.
