Last week we had a bit of a health scare with Everly. She hasn't been sick her whole life. She's been so healthy for us. On Tuesday, she began to have a small rash on her rib cage that looked like little pimples. It was still there Wednesday and it was just barley worse. Wednesday she slept longer than normal for her nap and she woke up sweating like crazy. That evening I realized she was clammy and her skin was sticky like she was sweating. We stuck her in a light onesie and let her sleep with us because I was worried. She seemed fine in the morning and one of my friends text me and invited us to a little Halloween thing so I jumped in the shower. When I got out, I went to change Everly and get her ready for the day and saw hives ALL over her whole body. Within 30 minutes it had doubled in severity and was all over. I decided to make her a doctor appointment.
I wasn't sure whether I could give her Benadryl or not and I didn't know what would be causing such a horrible reaction. We went to the doctor that afternoon and the doctor was a little perplexed but thought it was probably a virus that had caused the hives and just told me to give her Benadryl and watch her breathing close. They checked her ears, checked her for strep and asked 100 questions then we were off. Once we were home I gave Ev a few oatmeal baths in hopes of soothing her. She didn't seem bothered by the hives until we tried to put her to bed. She was so itchy. The Benadryl wasn't helping at all and when we tried to rub hydrocortisone cream on her it made things much worse from rubbing. That night she didn't sleep at all...okay she slept two hours. She just couldn't get comfortable and she itched and cried all night. I felt so bad and I was beyond worried about her. I made another appointment first thing in the morning because her hives were turning a grey color.
The doctor was concerned that the hives were that much worse and the Benadryl wasn't helping. The doctor was so kind. She told me she did more research after she saw us and thought a lot about it trying to figure out what it could be. She still thought it was from a virus but was worried Everly's immune system wasn't working well against the virus. She started Everly on a steroid that we had to give her for three days. Within about four hours of having the steroid Everly was already so much better.
We began to give her Zurtec in the morning and Benadryl at night along with the steroid. Some of the hives are still visible today but you can hardly see any trace of them anymore. I'm so thankful she's okay! We were so very worried! I'm grateful for doctors and modern medicine!
P.S. Most of the pictures are blurry because let's face it, it's impossibly hard to get her to stay still for a picture these days.
