Book Nook: On Becoming Baby Wise

So I read On Becoming Baby Wise when Everly was about five months old. I was extremely sleep deprived and really didn't have much when it came to brain power. I decided it was too late for Everly and I would just have to try it with the next baby. Well I've been on a baby book reading kick and I just finished Babywise again. I took diligent notes and I'm working on a little plan/guide for Sam and I when the new baby is born. We're going to start right away and just really hope it works out for us. The key points to know from this book are:
  • Establish a good feeding routine. Get baby to feed every 2 1/2-3 hours and avoid snack feeding.
  • Make sure baby's routine is feed/wake/sleep
  • Put baby down for naps and bed while baby is still awake. Baby may cry a little but it's important for baby to learn to fall asleep without any props.
  • Babies who do these things will most likely begin sleeping through the night on their own.

I took almost 15 pages of notes on this book this time around. Obviously there's a lot more to the book than these four points but that's the basic idea. The main idea behind the book is about feeding. It's called PDF (or Parent Directed Feeding) where the parent watches their baby as well as the clock and makes intelligent decisions as to when the baby needs to eat. I'm really excited to begin working with our newborn. I sure do hope he sleeps well for us (and eats well for us!!). I think a big part of Everly's problem was she was totally a snack eater and I didn't know how to change that at the time and then she developed bad sleep habits from an early age that have unfortunately stuck around.
